Unfair Trades

Unfair Trades by Alyssa Kimiko Carlsen

We’ve fallen,
into belief
A patriarchal plan
disguised as a fable
killed the souls of all peoples
Casting foggy spells
putting women to sleep
and making tears sear
against the cheek
of every man

Ariel had it all wrong
but what Disney Princess
didn’t turn into
a bitter Queen
See mermaids make unfair trades
Fins for legs are like trading
Screenshot (42).png
Ice skates for concrete blocks
Warm hands for guns
Soft lips for porcupines
Villages for capitalism
like trading, well, fins for legs.

Before you receive your wish
of breathing above water
let me give you fair warning here

Life on land is simply
And humans are
messy messy beings
and hurt people hurt people
upon a national anthem of hurt people
Instead of swimming were shooting
We shoot for freedom
We shoot for fear
We forgot how to swim so here

we manage to

Amidst a drought
We manage to drown

I believe in letters stained in tea, mermaids, and the power of a story. I got sober in 2014 and began working in the sex industry in 2016.
